Heim Sohne was founded in 1862 producing tortoiseshell combs, in 1901 the third generation decided that the protection of the turtle was paramount and started using Plexiglass in its place.
 
Acrylic glass / Plexiglass is non toxic, weather proof and extremly light. It is often used in sterile environments such as hospitals due to the lack of toxins present.
